Who do you think you are?

TV programs such as Who Do You Think You Are and Heir Hunters make good viewing. Genealogy is big business as more and more people become interested in discovering their roots; finding out what, and especially who, has contributed to making them what they are today. The increased interest is creating a multi million pound business in the UK.
For the first time The Society of Will Writers, working in partnership with Whenigo Administrators Pty, brings you the Emotional Will.

What is an emotional Will? It is a simple and fun way for all the family to get involved in ensuring that the people and events that shaped their lives are not lost forever but passed on to future generations. When the author of the Emotional Will dies a beautiful bound copy is produced and presented to the family for them to cherish and keep for future generations. The Emotional Wills can build into a library of information which will grow as more family members and generations create their own Emotional Will.
When a grandparent or parent dies, the family usually inherit a box of photographs, some papers and letters, maybe birth, marriage and of course death certificates but they are just brief glimpses into their life. How much better would it be for the family to receive, on the death of a loved parent or grandparent, a bound chronicle of their life, where photos are linked by the story behind them?

Grandchildren can help build this beautiful legacy by asking their grandparents to tell them of their past, about their parents and aunts and uncles who are possibly now long gone and may be forgotten by the future generations. If the grandparents are not computer users the grandchildren can help further by writing the stories for them.

Of course one can always leave a scrapbook – but we don’t. The Emotional Will can help bring families together as stories are told and pasts revealed. Grandchildren can get involved in their grandparents past and help them write their stories, and the grandparent that is part of the ‘silver surfer’ generation could also get a new interest in sorting through photos, letters, papers and other memorabilia. If it can be scanned into a document it can go into their Emotional Will. Possibly for the first time families may truly realise many of the joys and the hardships their parents, grandparents and great grandparents have gone through to give us the life we have today.
Creating your Emotional Will will be fun, and an activity the whole family can get involved in.
